San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is a largest airport in Bay Area. It is a locked circle and has two levels.  Airport shuttles are located on the upper level (Departures), on the outer curb, in the loading island.  There are 4 loading terminals: 1 - most of the airlines, 2, various airlines, 3 - United and American, 4 - International Terminal.  Each of the terminals have 3 loading zones: "Blue" - Supershuttle, "Red" - Go Lorrie's and American, "Rainbow" all other shuttle bus companies.  Airport shuttle vans are regulated by coordinators from 10:00am to 10:00pm.  Outside of this time frame the shuttles are still there but you are on your own.

Tips on using airport shuttle: Make sure to ask, when the van will leave airport, and how many stops there will be before you.  Also watch out for hustlers and strangers trying to help you find a shuttle, just follow signs and ask airport personal only.

It is always better to make a reservation ahead of time.  This way you will know for sure where to go and who to contact.  Most of the airport shuttle companies will ask for a credit card information to secure the reservation.  Ask for contact information and confirm your reservation, just in case, the day before (not necessary but "you never know").  Ask for confirmation numbers (if applicable), and make sure not to loose vouchers, coupons, and reservation slips. Below is the list of companies the will offer shuttle to San Francisco airport.

San Francisco Airport Transit:

Using public transportation to get to/form major airports in the area might be tricky but sometimes is the cheapest alternative to other forms of ground transportation.

San Francisco - San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Option One: SamTrans route KX (SFO shuttle bus) goes form the airport to San Francisco Downtown, has stops at Mission Street and 7th St. and Mission St. and 1st St. KX Express fare is about $5.

Option Two: Caltrain, you can take BART from the airport for one stop to get to Caltrain station in Millbrae, CA (100 California Drive, Millbrae 94030) or San Bruno, CA (481 Huntington Ave., San Bruno 94066). Caltrain also stops in following places in San Francisco: Bayshore Station at 400 Tunnel Ave., 22nd St. Station at 1149 22nd. St., and San Francisco Depot at 700 4th. Street. Caltrain fare between SF and San Bruno or Millbrae stations is about $5, BART fares from SFO to San Bruno is $7, and Millbrae is $4.

Option Three: BART, stops in airport and has stops in the following places in San Francisco: in SF Downtown, Embarcadero (Hyatt Regency Hotel), Montgomery St. (Palace Hotel), Powell St./Union Square Hotels, Civic Center/UN Plaza (Holiday Inn Civic Center, Whitcomb Hotel, Renoir Hotel), in the Mission and further south, 16th St./Mission St., 24th St. and Mission St., Glen Park (corner of Diamond and Bosworth Streets), and Balboa Park (between Mission Street and I-280 north of Geneva Avenue). BART fare is about $7-$9 from SF to SFO.

Option Four: It is important to note that even though it is possible to get to other places in SF using transit it might be too much of the hustle getting form bus stop to bus stop especially with luggage and paying for transit (if you pay for BART, SamTrans, or Caltrain you will still need to pay for MUNI) unless you travel very light and live close by one of the stops (of BART, Caltrain, or SamTrans, so you don't have to transfer) it might make more sense to use SFO shuttle service (share ride van), it would be only a few dollars more in total price (tip the driver, if you like the service) but quicker and more convenient because they will take you right to the door for about $15-$18, taxi is about $40, car service (limo) $55 and up.

San Francisco - Oakland International Airport (OAK)

The only reasonable option (for transit) would be to use BART. You will have to take a cab, MUNI or walk to the nearest BART station (in SF Downtown, Embarcadero (Hyatt Regency Hotel), Montgomery St. (Palace Hotel), Powell St./Union Square Hotels, Civic Center/UN Plaza (Holiday Inn Civic Center, Whitcomb Hotel, Renoir Hotel), in the Mission and further south, 16th St./Mission St., 24th St. and Mission St., Glen Park (corner of Diamond and Bosworth Streets), and Balboa Park (between Mission Street and I-280 north of Geneva Avenue). BART then will take you to Oakland International Airport (OAK). It is important to know that BART will not go directly into OAK, Coliseum/Oakland Airport Station BART station is located at 7200 San Leandro St. and Hegenberger in Oakland from there you will have to take AirBART, a shuttle bus that will take you right to the terminal. Taking a shuttle from SF will be more expensive but still might be a better option if you have a lot of luggage or live far away form bus stop. Using BART guarantees that you will not get stock in traffic on Bay Bridge or on busy stretch of I 880 between Oakland Airport and Bay Bridge, this freeway is always very busy with commuters and big trucks serving Port of Oakland. BART fare is about $4-$5 from SF to OAK, MUNI fare is about $2 (to get to BART station from other parts of SF), compare with $27-$30 depending on the company, for shuttle and about $55 for a taxi cab, $65 and up with car service or a limo.

San Francisco - San Jose International Airport (SJC)

The only reasonable option (for transit) would be to use Caltrain. Caltrain stops in following places in San Francisco: Bayshore Station at 400 Tunnel Ave., 22nd St. Station at 1149 22nd. St., and San Francisco Depot at 700 4th. Street. You will have to take MUNI or a cab to one of these stops. Then you will have to take Caltrain to Santa Clara Station located at 1001 Railroad Ave., Santa Clara 95050, from there you will have to take a very short ride via VTA SJC Airport Flyer (Route 10 - airport shuttle bus) that takes you between the Santa Clara Caltrain Station and the San Jose International Airport (SJC). The Airport Flyer is free and operates seven days a week throughout the day. Caltrain rate SF - SJC is about $8, MUNI fare is about $2 (to get to train station from other parts of SF), compare with shuttle fare at about $60-$80 depending on the company, and taxi of about $170. But transit take a long time.

San Francisco - Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

The only reasonable option (for transit) would be to use Amtrak. San Francisco has only bus stations for Thruway connection shuttle bus. (see the list of Amtrak Stations in SF below). You have to make it to one of these stations and take a shuttle bus to ether Emeryville or Oakland Train station, from there you should take Amtrak train to Sacramento (Sacramento, CA (SAC) at 401 I Street Sacramento, CA 95814) form there you can catch hourly bus service on Yolobus Rte 42B from 4th and L Streets, two blocks south of the Sacramento station. This route (Rte 42) will take you strait to Sacramento International Airport (SMF). The whole trip should take about 3-4 hours, and cost for Amtrak is $25-$30, Yolobus fare is $2 as same as MUNI, compare that to $120 - $200 for San Francisco shuttle to Sacramento airport and well over $300 for a cab, you can find a car service that will take you for about $250. Driving time between San Francisco and Sacramento Airport is about 2.5 hours with no traffic.
